Global Funding Mobilized to Stop Virus Spread Now

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The African Development Bank Group has sanctioned $13 million in emergency grants to bolster efforts in containing a fresh outbreak of Ebola virus disease in central and eastern Africa. The allocated funds aim to improve national emergency response capabilities and prevent the virus from spreading further in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda. This rapid financial deployment is intended to strengthen regional containment measures and reduce mortality rates in the most vulnerable zones.

The health emergency began in the DRC, where authorities officially declared the new Ebola outbreak on May 15, 2026. The epidemic initially focused on the eastern Ituri province, affecting areas such as Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu. Since then, the virus has quickly extended beyond its initial epicenter into neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. Experts have identified the culprit as the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a highly contagious and dangerous variant currently lacking an approved vaccine or targeted treatment.

To facilitate rapid response, the total funding is split into two separate grants managed by major international health agencies. A primary grant of $10 million, sourced from reallocated resources within the existing DRC portfolio of the African Development Bank, will be administered directly through the World Health Organization. An additional $3 million, derived from the bank’s Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project covering the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, will be executed by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

These financial resources are allocated strategically to address the different levels of crisis faced by each country. The DRC, as the epicenter of the current outbreak, will receive the largest share with $11 million. Uganda and South Sudan are each allocated $1 million from the Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project. The targeted funding aims to enhance preventative strategies, strengthen health infrastructure, and prepare border areas for potential cross-border transmission.

Under the Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak Response Plan, the funds will be deployed in coordination with the respective national health authorities. The main goal is to stop the virus’s spread while decreasing mortality and morbidity in at-risk communities. Key activities include improving early diagnosis capabilities, expanding epidemiological surveillance, supporting community engagement, launching public awareness initiatives, and ensuring regional coordination to unify the medical response efforts.

Mohamed Cherif, the Deputy Director General for Central Africa and the DRC country representative for the African Development Bank, highlighted the critical need for this financial support. “This emergency aid highlights the African Development Bank Group’s dedication to assisting the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries in saving lives, enhancing health system resilience, and preventing the epidemic’s spread,” Cherif stated. He also reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting its regional member countries during times of crisis.

The global healthcare community remains vigilant as the situation unfolds. Since pharmacological options are unavailable for the Bundibugyo strain, medical teams must depend solely on strict containment, quarantine protocols, and symptomatic treatment. This emergency funding will enable local authorities to establish safe isolation facilities, sustain essential health services, and address the logistical challenges posed by a highly infectious and rapidly spreading disease.
