KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia has ramped up its readiness efforts for increasingly hot and arid conditions as El Niño gains strength across the Pacific. The Alliance for a Safe Community emphasized the importance of early measures to safeguard water resources, public health, agriculture, and delicate ecosystems. Chairman Lee Lam Thye urged collaboration among government bodies, private sector entities, and local communities to ensure a coordinated response. He highlighted that prompt action could help lessen the strain on vital services during extended periods of high temperatures and scarce rainfall.

According to MetMalaysia’s July 14 report, moderate El Niño conditions are currently present. The agency forecasts that this climatic phase will persist until at least April 2027. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region are currently 1.3 degrees Celsius above average. Additionally, MetMalaysia predicts that conditions will intensify from October through December 2026, with the possibility of reaching a very strong level during that timeframe.
The national weather outlook indicates a decline in rainfall across several parts of Malaysia in the latter half of 2026. The most significant drop is expected in July and August, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Regions such as southern Peninsular Malaysia, parts of Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are forecasted to experience reduced rainfall. Such dry conditions could heighten the risk of fires and haze, especially when open burning occurs. Nonetheless, heavy rains and thunderstorms remain possible during the monsoon season.
Prioritizing Water Security
The National Disaster Management Agency has expanded measures to address the hot and dry weather. Since February, authorities have completed seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Three additional cloud seeding series are scheduled to support rainfall and maintain reservoir levels. Fire and environmental teams have been instructed to monitor 83 locations at high risk of open burning. These steps are part of the government’s comprehensive response to El Niño.
Water resource agencies are tasked with identifying dams requiring urgent maintenance and evaluating additional groundwater sources for tube wells. Health and education authorities are enhancing guidance for schools and vulnerable populations. The safety coalition also recommends reducing water losses from aging pipelines, increasing storage capacity, promoting efficient irrigation, providing technical support to farmers, and reinforcing enforcement against forest and peatland fires. Continuous monitoring of water reserves and agricultural conditions remains a priority.
Expanding Public Health Advisories
Lee Lam Thye emphasized that seniors, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health issues should be prioritized. He urged for increased public awareness campaigns on water conservation, heat safety, and fire prevention. Residents are encouraged to use the myCuaca app for localized weather forecasts, alerts, and official updates. Authorities also monitor air quality, drought levels, fire risks, and temperature trends. This information helps schools and workplaces make informed safety decisions on a daily basis.
The latest international climate assessment indicates a 97% probability that El Niño will persist into early 2027. It also estimates an 81% chance of a very strong event occurring from October through December. Malaysia’s current preparedness efforts encompass water management, cloud seeding, public health messaging, fire prevention, and weather surveillance. The government continues to coordinate these initiatives through both national and state agencies. Officials advise the public to stay updated with verified information and to conserve water during dry spells.
