New Mexico Court Mandates Meta to Pay $567 Million for Youth Mental Health Initiatives

SANTA FE, Mexico / RankWire.AI / – A decision issued by a New Mexico state court requires Meta to contribute $567 million to a fund dedicated to youth mental health and child safety improvements, following a ruling that labeled its platforms as creating a public nuisance. The verdict was announced by Presiding Judge Bryan Biedscheid of the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe after a three-week bench trial. The court found that Facebook and Instagram played a significant role in worsening a youth mental health crisis and failed to adequately protect minors from online exploitation.

This latest monetary order builds on a prior $375 million jury award issued in March 2026 during the initial phase of the state’s legal case. During that trial, jurors determined that Meta violated New Mexico consumer protection laws by misrepresenting safety features aimed at younger users. When combined, the two rulings mean Meta faces a total liability of $942 million in the state enforcement action led by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, with the company ordered to pay $567 million toward teen mental health initiatives alone.

According to the detailed remedial order issued by the court, $420 million of the newly awarded funds will directly support clinical mental health treatment services for children across New Mexico. The remaining funds are allocated for public education campaigns, early screening programs, and community prevention efforts over the next five years. The ruling also imposes strict operational requirements for Meta, including enforcing default private settings for users under 18, limiting daily engagement time, restricting notification pushes, and enhancing screening for child sexual abuse material.

This enforcement action in Mexico stands as one of the most substantial financial penalties ever imposed on a major tech firm concerning child safety practices. Attorney General Torrez initiated the lawsuit after investigations revealed that algorithmic recommendation systems systematically exposed minor accounts to predatory contact and explicit material. While the court mandated significant product modifications, Judge Biedscheid chose not to require mandatory identity verification for users under 13, citing federal privacy protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Following the court session, Meta’s corporate representatives confirmed that the company plans to appeal the ruling to higher state courts. In an official statement, Meta emphasized its substantial investments in developing age-appropriate features, parent supervision tools, and automated content moderation. Company officials argued that the ruling misinterprets the platform’s architecture and overlooks internal efforts to remove harmful content and combat bad actors on social media.

Judge Orders Funds Toward Prevention and Early Detection Initiatives

This ruling comes amid increasing legal challenges faced by social media companies across both federal and state courts in the United States. More than 40 state attorneys general, along with hundreds of local school districts, have filed similar lawsuits, claiming platform design choices foster compulsive usage among teenagers. The New Mexico decision sets a key legal precedent, as other cases proceed toward trial in federal courts later this year.

As Meta prepares to contest the $567 million payment in appellate courts, state officials are reviewing how the proceeds will be allocated. Early indications suggest funding will prioritize rural healthcare access, behavioral health counseling, and school-based health centers. The remedies mandated by the court are scheduled to stay in effect for five years, pending the outcome of Meta’s appeal.
