GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / RankWire.AI / – The World Trade Organization is set to hold its first-ever World Trade and Tech Day on September 14 at its headquarters in Geneva. This event will gather trade officials, technology policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders. Under the theme, “AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress,” the discussions will center on artificial intelligence and its implications for global commerce. The agenda emphasizes policies that broaden access to AI tools while fostering more inclusive international trade.

WTO trade and tech day puts inclusive AI policy in focus
World Trade and Tech Day will put inclusive AI policy at the center of global trade talks.

Kicking off the event, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will deliver opening remarks. A ministerial dialogue will delve into why artificial intelligence has emerged as a key trade policy issue. The program will also feature a keynote speech and a panel discussion with private-sector representatives. Topics covered include digital services, intellectual property, technical standards, and the role of developing economies in AI-driven value chains. These sessions aim to connect technology policy with the practical needs of cross-border commerce.

The meeting will be informed by the World Trade Report 2025, which serves as a crucial reference point. According to WTO modeling, artificial intelligence has the potential to boost global trade by as much as 37% by 2040, with an estimated increase of up to 13% in worldwide gross domestic product. The extent of these benefits depends heavily on infrastructure, workforce skills, technology adoption, and policy environments. The report also highlights that unequal access could hinder participation from lower-income economies.

    Trade policy takes center stage

A number of sessions will explore how AI can reduce the costs associated with international trade. Attendees will review various tools that assist companies in processing documents, ensuring compliance, and analyzing supply chains. Discussions will also encompass digitally delivered services and the treatment of intellectual property rights. Another focus will be on how technical standards can facilitate compatibility across different markets. These issues reflect AI’s growing role in customs, logistics, finance, and other trade-related sectors.

Additionally, the program aims to address obstacles that hinder broader AI adoption. Many businesses still struggle with unreliable connectivity, limited computing resources, lack of skilled personnel, and affordable financing. Smaller enterprises often encounter legal and technical hurdles when entering digital markets. The WTO’s small-business group explored these challenges during a June discussion on AI and trade, emphasizing how new tools can improve market research, cut costs, and enhance access to trade information.

    Showcasing practical AI innovations

An exhibition of AI applications relevant to international commerce will be part of World Trade and Tech Day. A pitching session will feature tools developed for companies, government agencies, and trade organizations. These demonstrations aim to connect the policy discussions with tangible implementations of AI technology. Attendees will see how AI supports supply-chain analysis, regulatory processes, and access to market data. This format offers real-world examples of systems already contributing to trade activities.

The event on September 14 will be hosted at the World Trade Organization’s Geneva headquarters. Its agenda includes ministerial discussions, input from the business community, policy analysis, and technological showcases. Focus areas will include artificial intelligence, trade costs, digital services, and economic participation. The program will also examine the infrastructure and skill development needed for wider AI adoption. Details regarding registration and online participation can be found on the official event page.
