Ebola Crisis in DR Congo Reaches 8,376 Confirmed Cases and 4,042 Deaths

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has documented 8,376 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,042 fatalities, according to the latest data from national health authorities. This outbreak has become the most extensive and deadly Ebola epidemic ever recorded within the country. By late September, cases had been reported in 63 health zones across seven of the nation’s 26 provinces. The rising death toll has kept the outbreak at the forefront of regional public health initiatives.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 8,376 confirmed cases
Health authorities track Ebola transmission across several provinces in DR Congo.

The epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, a variant of Ebola that has caused ongoing transmission since the emergency started in May. Congolese officials announced the outbreak on May 15 after cases emerged in the country’s northeast. This marks the 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976. Ituri remains a primary transmission zone, with additional cases reported in North Kivu and other regions.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya has issued warnings about the threat to neighboring nations. Persistent transmission and cross-border population movement have prompted regional health authorities to intensify surveillance and preparedness efforts. Uganda, which previously identified infections linked to the Congolese outbreak, concluded its own outbreak in August. Authorities continue to monitor cases related to travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Regional danger persists at high levels

The World Health Organization has classified the risk within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high, and it has also considered the threat to neighboring border countries as high. Contributing factors include population movement, unregulated border crossings, and ongoing transmission, all of which heighten the likelihood of cross-border spread. WHO recommends strengthening surveillance, laboratory capabilities, and cross-border cooperation instead of implementing unnecessary travel or trade restrictions.

The Congolese government, alongside health partners, continues to carry out surveillance, testing, contact tracing, patient care, and community outreach throughout affected regions. Measures are also in place to safeguard health workers and enhance access to communities where transmission persists. Ongoing insecurity and population mobility in eastern Congo have hampered operational efforts, especially in several affected health zones. Public health teams persist in tracking new cases while supporting treatment centers and local response systems.

    International aid bolsters containment efforts

On October 3, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri and reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting the Ebola response. France allocated 13.4 million euros for Ebola-related initiatives from January to July 2026, covering humanitarian aid, research, and health programs. During his visit, Barrot toured an Ebola treatment facility and met with officials involved in the response. He also announced that France will seek additional humanitarian funding through upcoming budget discussions.

Currently, there is no specifically approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola, emphasizing the importance of case detection and infection control as key components of the response. Health authorities and research partners are evaluating potential medical countermeasures, while frontline teams continue to isolate cases, trace contacts, and provide supportive care. The outbreak has already exceeded the scale of previous Ebola epidemics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities keep updating case figures as ongoing surveillance and laboratory testing reveal new infections.
