KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – The United Nations and humanitarian partners are seeking $49.6 million for Nepal flood relief. The four-month flash appeal targets 84,270 people affected by the August 26 disaster. That represents 19,284 households across 17 municipalities in six districts. Nearly 40% of the people targeted are children. The response focuses on Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha and Tanahu. Nepalese authorities continue relief and recovery work across the affected areas.

Nepal flood appeal targets 84,270 people with $49.6m
Nepal flood relief efforts focus on emergency aid for families across six affected districts.

The calamity was triggered by a glacial collapse that caused a destructive rush of water, mud, and debris. Floodwaters inundated communities along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system and surrounding regions. By September 6, the death toll had surpassed 1,300 across Nepal. Search and rescue operations continue, with nearly 5,000 people still missing. Teams have also investigated hydropower tunnels and settlements buried in mud. Some survivors have been located days after the floods struck.

Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, homes, schools, power lines, and local water systems have suffered extensive damage. Certain mountain communities remain hard to access due to destroyed or blocked transport links. This emergency appeal supports Nepal’s government-led efforts to respond under these challenging conditions. It includes provisions for shelter, food, health services, clean water, sanitation, and protection. Additionally, aid agencies plan to support electricity access and rural livelihoods. Preparing for winter is also incorporated into this four-month humanitarian strategy.

    Relief efforts prioritize vital services

The appeal provides direct cash assistance where local markets are still operational for affected families. Relief teams can also deliver cold-weather shelter materials and portable solar devices. Support for water involves repairs, purification systems, and hygiene supplies. Healthcare efforts focus on emergency treatment and nutrition support. Protection services include aid for children separated from their families. Food aid and livestock support are also integral parts of the plan. These measures aim to meet immediate needs across communities impacted by the Nepal floods.

Access remains a significant obstacle in northern Nepal. Damaged roads and bridges have hindered relief efforts in upper Rasuwa, with some locations accessible only by foot. Recent humanitarian assessments identified 3,844 displaced individuals living across 34 sites in four areas. They also reported 4,288 affected households, including 2,886 displaced households. These figures highlight the ongoing demand for shelter, water, food, and essential services as relief activities expand.

Humanitarian supplies dispatched to affected regions

UNICEF received 84 metric tonnes of emergency supplies in Kathmandu on September 4 for distribution among affected communities. The cargo included water tanks, hygiene kits, and water treatment materials. It also contained diarrhoea treatment equipment, tents, winter clothing, and learning supplies. Trucks have since started transporting aid towards Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. These deliveries aim to support safe drinking water, disease prevention, health services, and education for children and families impacted by the floods.

The $49.6 million appeal covers ten humanitarian sectors through the end of 2026. Food security needs are estimated at about $7.94 million. Water and sanitation requirements total roughly $7.9 million, while health services need around $7.6 million. Logistics and emergency telecommunications demand approximately $7.33 million, and shelter needs are projected at about $7.1 million. These five key areas comprise the majority of the appeal, as Nepal continues its response to one of its most severe recent flood disasters.
