These versatile, open-platform tests are intended to enhance infection detection capabilities and bolster laboratory infrastructure amid the crisis. This procurement was arranged with the assistance of the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. The delivery process is scheduled to commence in August, providing essential diagnostic supplies as health authorities battle the rising number of cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The PCR testing kits will be shipped to the World Health Organization’s Logistics Hub for Global Health Emergencies in Dubai. WHO will oversee their distribution to the regions involved in the Ebola response efforts. PCR testing is crucial for confirming infections quickly, as laboratories can handle large sample volumes with high accuracy. The equipment integrates with existing laboratory setups, enabling faster diagnosis that helps health teams identify infected patients, arrange suitable care and isolation, and facilitate contact tracing around confirmed cases.
This latest procurement complements a previous European Commission agreement for €2.5 million in rapid molecular point-of-care tests and testing devices, which are aimed at supporting the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Collectively, these initiatives bring the EU’s total diagnostic support to €4.6 million. These measures are part of a broader European response to the Bundibugyo virus emergency, which has increasingly strained healthcare systems in affected regions of Central and East Africa.
Diagnostic support ramps up as outbreak intensifies

The outbreak has spread across 54 health zones in six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo and Bas-Uélé. The European Commission announced that it has mobilized €493 million to fund emergency relief, vaccination campaigns, treatment programs, and health security measures across the Great Lakes and Uganda regions. European health authorities have also contributed to surveillance, laboratory testing, and preparedness initiatives during the outbreak. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to assess the risk posed to European populations as very low, citing the need for direct contact with infectious body fluids and the low probability of sustained transmission within Europe.
The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern, a designation WHO declared on May 17. Unlike the more prevalent Zaire ebolavirus, the Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment options. WHO persists in emphasizing the importance of surveillance, rapid diagnostics, patient isolation, clinical care, infection control, and contact monitoring.
